HOW AN AIR SPRING WORKS
An air spring consists of a compartment filled with pressurized air and a rolling piston connected to the vehicle’s axle or integrated into the suspension strut. A rubber sleeve is securely fastened between these two components using high-grade steel crimping rings, ensuring a durable and airtight construction. This area forms the “active area” for the pressurized air.
An Electronic Control Unit (ECU) continuously monitors inputs such as height sensors, vehicle speed, and acceleration sensors to determine whether the air spring should inflate or deflate. This process maintains the vehicle at its predetermined ride height.

AIR SPRING CHARACTERISTICS
Conventional coil springs have a linear spring rate, meaning the same compression force is needed to compress them during the complete stroke. These coil springs can be tuned to progressive behavior by changing the distance between the turns and/or varying the thickness of the steel.
Air springs exhibit a progressive spring rate. The force required to compress an air spring increases exponentially through the stroke, meaning more force is needed to compress the air spring near the end of the stroke. This results in an overall more comfortable driving experience. The spring behavior can be adapted to a more comfortable or sportier ride by changing the angle of the rolling piston. This is one of the reasons that a passenger car’s sport (air) suspension system usually features a different air spring than the standard (air) suspension for the same model.
WHY AIR SPRINGS OUTPERFORM COIL SPRINGS
Air spring systems offer self-leveling capabilities, automatically adjusting to maintain consistent ride height, even when the vehicle is loaded with cargo. Coil springs, in contrast, do not compensate for additional weight and are more likely to bottom out on uneven surfaces or rough terrain.
Reducing the air inside the air spring lowers the ride height at high speeds. This brings the vehicle closer to the ground, decreasing the drag coefficient and thus reducing fuel consumption.
At higher speeds, the system can reduce the air pressure to lower the vehicle’s ride height. This reduces aerodynamic drag, contributing to better fuel efficiency. Another key advantage is comfort. Air springs naturally absorb road harshness, delivering a smoother, quieter ride. Most drivers cite this as the top benefit of having a vehicle with factory-equipped or high-quality aftermarket air suspension.

While some aftermarket air springs may look similar on the outside, the differences can be significant. Using lower-grade materials, simplified piston designs, or subpar rubber can result in lower burst strength, poor fitment, compromised comfort, and increased NVH (Noise, Vibration, and Harshness).
