As every technician knows, the number one reason a vehicle breaks down during the cold and winter months relate to its battery.
While some batteries may be salvaged by a good long run or, where possible, by being hooked up to a decent charger for a long period, more often than not the simplest solutions will result in its replacement.
And three products from WD-40®’s suite could well make the mundane task of replacing one as trouble free as possible.
First up must be WD-40 Specialist Penetrant; the company’s leading product used for ‘penetrating’ deep into seized parts and components and freeing them up. A swift dab on those exposed bolts holding a battery securely will help significantly with its swift and trouble-free removal.
Secondly, reaching for WD-40 Specialist Contact Cleaner to clean the vehicle’s battery lead connectors and terminals is arguably a must, even if there is no build-up of the white powder-like corrosion which there will almost surely be with an older vehicle. Again, a blast with the spray and a thorough wipe with a cloth generally does the trick in removing any condensation, dirt, dust, general grime and oil.
And thirdly, WD-40 Specialist White Lithium Grease is a must for the terminals. The high-performance spray provides super protection for heavy duty metal-to-metal applications, ideal for connecting the terminal to the vehicle’s battery leads and providing that extra splice of protection against corrosion going forward.
Once in place, it’s a case of firmly connecting the terminals, securing the battery in place. Job done!
